Many visitors were out braving the strong winds and potential of rain! Many were able to get views of the Peregrine Falcon hanging around the area, as well as the local Bald Eagles! Don't Forget! The Hawk Festival isn't over yet! Tomorrow (Sunday) will be the second day of the festival, or if you can't make it then, come out to see us on the second festival weekend! (17th & 18th)! Weather: The first day of the Hawk Festival was greeted very strong winds from the South for most of the day, with a few brief rain showers. Raptor Observations: Sharp-shinned Hawks, American Kestrels, and Merlins were the most common raptors of the day! There was also a Peregrine Falcon, likely the same bird observed yesterday, that spent the majority of the morning flying around the vicinity, which many of our visitors for the Hawk Festival were able to see! Non-raptor Observations: Non-raptor observations were fairly low today, low numbers of American Goldfinch and Cedar Waxwing were noted, but swallow numbers were fairly high (over 250 including Purple Martins), although many remained unidentified. For the full eBird checklist of all non-migrant-raptors observed go to: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S31515031 Only 2 Black Saddlebags were noted, and only 1 Monarch. Predictions: Winds switching to NW for tomorrow! Should be a good day for some migration! ======================================================================== Report submitted by Sean Jenniskens ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
