Weather: We arrived to the count site to find a thick layer of fog, allowing us to see only ~ 0.25 km away, which mostly receded by 11:00. Once the fog receded, the wind became more favorable for hawk migration (switched from blowing from the north to from the southeast). By the end of the count, at least one counter's arms were burned like the fog had been (but luckily didn't disappear!). Raptor Observations: After the slow start due to unfavorable wind and visibility conditions, Sharp-shinned Hawks made a big push across the river around noon and tapered off in the afternoon. Northern Harriers and Broad-winged Hawks were also migrating, as were American Kestrels. We also spotted several migrant Bald Eagles, Turkey Vultures, and a Cooper's Hawk. Non-raptor Observations: Migrant warblers flew overhead this morning, though we were able to identify only a Yellow Warbler. Northern Flickers also flew over this morning, as well as Monarch butterflies. Predictions: The predicted rain and thunderstorms tomorrow could deter the migrants, though we will have to wait to see! ======================================================================== Report submitted by Detroit River Hawk Watch ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
