Highlights: The last couple of weeks have seen an increase in shorebird sightings with the majority coming from Martin Edwards Reserve, Amherst Island. As many as 7 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, 5 STILT SANDPIPERS, 4 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and 2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS have been noted there amongst the more regular LEAST, SEMIPALMATED and SPOTTED SANPIPERS. A couple of SANDERLINGS have also been present. Elsewhere, other interesting sightings have included the return of 2 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS to a private feeder near Gananoque and a LEAST BITTERN just north of Kingston at Collins Lake. On Wolfe Island, a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was seen on 24th August, as was an ORCHARD ORIOLE. Unusual for the island, a TRUMPETER SWAN was seen in Bayfield Bay on 29th Aug. Big Sandy Bay, also on Wolfe Island, has had a few migrant warblers and thrushes passing through including CANADA, WILSON'S and BAY-BREASTED but all in relatively low numbers. A CAROLINA WREN was heard singing on nearby Garden Island on 4th/5th Sep. A NORTHERN PARULA was seen north of Kingston, at Elginburg on the early date of 26th Aug. An AMERICAN PIPIT was at Camden Lake on 4th Sep. Across the border in Jefferson County, NY, a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was seen at Perch River WMA on 25th Aug, with BAIRD'S and STILT SANDPIPERS there on 4th Sep. A WHIMBREL was seen at El Dorado Beach Preserve on 5th Sep. In order to minimise disturbance to wildlife and property, Kingston Field Naturalists has adopted the KFN Sensitive Sightings Policy. Also note that, as requested by the landowners, sightings of owls at the privately-owned Owl Woods must not be shared on the Internet (this includes posting as 'Amherst Island' on eBird) by KFN or anyone who visits. To ensure continued access to this location, please respect their wishes and follow the guidelines posted on-site. To maintain records for conservation purposes, sightings from that location are welcomed through all the traditional channels. As always, thanks to all those who have submitted sightings over the last week. Mark. Mark D.
