Weather: Today was a very hot day today, and up on the tower in the sun it felt even hotter. Temperatures started around 17C, but the high for the day was 28C. Very little wind today was mostly South component. Raptor Observations: Raptors were moving moderately slow throughout the morning, but Sharp-shinned Hawks were moving fairly well and made up the majority of the birds observed. The highlight of the day was the first Peregrine Falcon of the year, first observed harassing a Northern Harrier in the distance, and flying right over the Hawk Tower shortly after. Raptor migration was pretty well ended by 2:30pm, likely due to the heat. Non-raptor Observations: Despite being fairly slow on the non-raptor front, there were a couple notables seen! First was an almost pure white leucistic Mourning Dove flying by in the early morning. A little later on in the morning there was an apparent Acadian Flycatcher sitting out in the open under the tower for a few minutes. Dragonfly wise, there were 5 Twelve-spotted Skimmers, 21 Black Saddlebags, and 9 Green Darners observed migrating. There were also 3 Monarch Butterflies migrating. The days eBird checklist can be found at http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S31439850#share-checklist Predictions: Tomorrow is calling for similar South winds like today, and be even hotter with a high of 31C it will be feeling like 40C! ======================================================================== Report submitted by Sean Jenniskens ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
