On Sunday, May 1, 2016, at approximately 5:00 PM, I observed a peregrine falcon
landing atop one lamp stand in the southernmost part of the parking lot of the
Superstore located on Lancashire Lane, which is just south of the southwest
corner of Steeles Avenue and Hurontario/Main St., as I entered the store. It
was still there when I exited, but then flew off to the southwest. However, I
saw it return as I reached my car and perch atop a different lamp stand. I
drove close enough to see a little detail, and although did not have my bins
with me, could make out its malar stripes. Body detail was hidden from view by
the lights on the stand. I had also seen it earlier in the afternoon, about
1:45 PM, as I was driving west along Steeles Avenue towards Hurontario/Main,
(which is why I was on the lookout for it when I went to Superstore). It was
flying in the sky above Superstore, chasing a pigeon. Both birds flew out of
view, obscured by trees and the Superstore building, so I do not know
whether the peregrine succeeded in capturing its prey. I suspect there may be
a nest somewhere nearby.
