Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) maintains records in a 50km radius of
MacDonald Park, Kingston. Birders already using eBird are encouraged to
share their sightings with 'Kingston FN'. Alternatively, please email, phone
or post records directly to me - contact details below. Please note that
some sightings may require review and remain unconfirmed unless stated
otherwise.
Highlights:
Well, it's certainly been a quiet week. Highlights include: CACKLING GOOSE,
CANVASBACK, SNOWY OWL, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, HERMIT THRUSH, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET
and lingering ICTERIDS.
Kingston
The best passerine of the week was a HERMIT THRUSH, found at Lemoine Point
CA on 9th. More than 200 TUNDRA SWANS continue to be seen in Cataraqui Bay
where a male CANVASBACK was seen on 9th. Singles of both SNOWY OWL and
PEREGRINE FALCON were seen there on 10th. At the Montreal Street Apartments,
which overlook the Inner Harbour, a SONG SPARROW was seen on 9th. NORTHERN
SHOVELER continue to be seen here as well as good numbers of AMERICAN COOT.
A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was at Sibbitt Ave. on 8th.
Wolfe Island IBA
Two of the three CACKLING GEESE seen last week were still at Button Bay on
5th. The number of SNOWY OWLS increases with 9 seen widely distributed
across the west end of the island on 10th. Waterfowl numbers are generally
down.
Amherst Island IBA
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen on the island on 8th. Other notable sightings
include a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET and RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD seen on 7th. Up to 6
SNOWY OWLS have been seen on the island this week. Please note that you must
be a member of Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) or be accompanied by a
member to access the Martin Edwards Reserve.
Other sightings
A sign of winter showed up at Verona, with 2 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS seen there on
7th. A first year LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was at Violet Rd. Dump, Odessa on
9th. Nearby, in Bath, 2 CACKLING GEESE were still present on 7th. Up at
Bedford Mills, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK terrorised the local bird population on
10th. On Washburn Road, near Sunbury, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS (max 19 on 10th)
continue to be seen daily. Small numbers of winter finches are beginning to
show up there too, with 2 PINE SISKINS and a COMMON REDPOLL seen on 8th. A
single RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD was at Florida Road on 7th. On Howe Island a
couple of COMMON GRACKLES have been seen on 2 dates this week. Across in the
States, 2 RED-THROATED LOONS were seen at Pillar Point on 7th.
Please note that Amherstview Sewage Lagoons remains closed.
