Visitors:
Thanks to members Jim McCoy,Larry Ludwicki, Bob Pettit, Dorothy McLeer and
Mike Williamson for their assistance today. A few couples of visitors
braved the elements to join us on the tower.
Weather:
A damp start as the rain took a little longer to depart the region than
originally forecast. Damp, cold North winds blew the birds down to our
area.
Raptor Observations:
Today we saw a good number of different species of raptors with plentiful
Red-tailed Hawks moving through. Still seeing Turkey Vultures and similar
numbers of Northern Harriers. Accipiter numbers are declining but we saw
Northern Goshawk, Cooper's Hawk and Sharp-shinned today. Red-shouldered
Hawks and the occasional Rough-legged were also seen. Two Bald Eagle but no
Goldens were spotted. One lone Peregrine Falcon made his presence known.
Non-raptor Observations:
Large flocks of Red-winged Blackbirds, smaller flocks of American
Goldfinch, European Starling and a small flock of House Finch were noted.
Duck numbers continue high with species including Mallard, Black Duck,
Gadwall, Northern Shoveller, Bufflehead, Pintail, and one Ruddy was
spotted. American Coots abound and the occasional Pied-billed Grebe was
seen. Two Great Blue Herons were hanging around. Several groups of
Bonaparte's Gulls seen also.A late in the day flock of 35 Sandhill Cranes
passed overhead.
Predictions:
North winds expected to continue and numbers should be good.
