Fear not for it wasn't long before a battalion of cumulus wandered in from the west. The cumulus continued to accumulate until early afternoon but the southwest wind, already strong, increased in intensity and blew them away, bringing plenty of blue sky back into view for the remainder of the day. Temperatures held steady in the low 50s throughout. Surprisingly, that combined with the strong southwest wind and mostly cloudy sky made for a not entirely unpleasant outing. Raptor Observations: Bald Eagles luxuriated in the gusting wind this afternoon. Hearty and spry, their unflappability was a sight to behold. Two roving vulture gangs joined them, as did four straggling sharpies, six amiable Redtails and one courageous Gray Ghost. Everyone else rendered a negative verdict on the proceedings. Non-raptor Observations: Common Loon (1), Tundra Swan (20+), Ruddy Duck (1), Common Goldeneye (3), Red-breasted Merganser (40+), scaup sp. (5000+) Predictions: Sunny with cool temps and strong west wind. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
