The wind then picked up to 22kph even more suddenly at 1pm from the very reasonable 15kph that it was before. It came mostly from the SSW and SW, churning up big waves and turning the lake brown. Raptor Observations: With an over 10x increase from yesterday, we were practically swimming in raptors today! All kidding aside, it was a productive day with 7 species, including 26 Turkey Vultures that had hung on this long and decided to get out while the getting was still good. An immature Golden Eagle was thinking of taking the same flight path as the TVs (down the shore and directly overhead) but changed its mind at the last minute, turning back and disappearing for 5 minutes and then reappearing much further to our north before passing by. Other excitement was from a Peregrine Falcon that gave us an amazing split second view in the scope before diving below some trees and out of sight. 10 Red-tails, 3 Sharpies, a Coop and a harrier finished off today's count. Non-raptor Observations: A few groups of passerines trickled by, mostly Horned Larks, Cedar Waxwings, Rusty Blackbirds, and American Goldfinches. A Rough-winged Swallow zoomed out over the marsh, trying to make up for how far it was behind all its friends that left weeks ago! Many of the ducks were hiding in vegetation today, but were scared up by the resident Bald Eagles a few times. 1 Monarch was seen below the tower. See today's eBird list http://ebird.org/ebird/canada/view/checklist?subID=S25911128 Predictions: The strong winds will continue tomorrow, changing to the west. We can also expect a drop in temperature. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jenna McDermott ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
