This morning while birding with Steve Charbonneau and Allen Woodliffe, we
found a female NORTHERN PARULA (record late by 10 days) on south point
trail. It was in the area opposite the trail to the light beacon. I went
back a couple of hours later with Garry Sadler and we refound it. Better
looks that time!
Earlier at dawn while doing the usual lakewatch at Dog Beach, we had two
groups of FRANKLIN'S GULLS. Conservative total estimate was 26 birds.
There were likely more, but it was difficult to count accurately.
Bonaparte's were in good numbers before the sun rose, but lighting was a
challenge, so who knows what all was out there! Yesterday we had fine looks
at an EARED GREBE there.
Another bird of interest was a GRAY CATBIRD feeding in dogwoods near the
washout on south point trail.
There are still lots of Yellow-rumped Warblers in the park, usually
associating with both types of kinglets.
Yesterday, I found a female WILSON'S WARBLER (record late by about 15 days)
about 100m before the south point trail washout.
I suspect these birds will still be around tomorrow given the nice weather.
You just have to find them!
Directions:
Getting to Rondeau Park, you have to detour off Kent Rd. 15 east to McKinley
Line (or Morpeth) and head down to Rose Beach Line. The warblers were on
south point trail at the very south end of Lakeshore Road on the east side
of the park. Dog Beach (always good for a morning lakewatch!) is about a
half km before you reach the south end of Lakeshore Rd.
**NOTE: Rondeau Park will be closed on Tuesday 17th and Thursday 19th for
deer herd management.
