Cloudy skies lingered for a few hours thereafter, but by early afternoon strands of blue began to break through, eventually resulting in a well-balanced and well-lit blend of blue and white, beneficial for spotting. Haze, such a thorn in our side of late, was gladly nowhere to be found. Temperatures straddled the low 60s throughout. As for the wind, it shifted to the west today, strengthening in intensity after noon. Raptor Observations: After several days wandering in the northern wilds (Southgate probably), Turkey Vultures returned to the fore. With a westerly wind shift, the flight line favored us anew. Problem was, not much else besides vultures appeared interested in migrating. A sprinkling of sharpies, tails and shoulders grinned and beared it, all tucking in and staying low to combat the strong west wind. For their part, Bald Eagles were as active as they've been in some time, positively giddy at the sight of afternoon clearing. Non-raptor Observations: All quiet on the songbird front: American Goldfinch (80+), Pine Siskin (15+), Blue Jay (4), Bonaparte's Gull (7), Monarch (1) Predictions: Partly cloudy with mild temps and moderate west wind. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
