The wind stayed strong off the lake. Raptor Observations: The count was conducted for 1.5 hours in the morning after which point, it was just too soggy out to think a raptor could possibly be flying and the count was delayed until the rain stopped at 1:30. No raptors migrated after that either, but that same Osprey of the last few days was still around, fishing! Non-raptor Observations: It's surprising the birds that you can see in the middle of a rain storm. The most Bonaparte's Gulls of the season (30) flew around the marsh, and against all odds, around 150 Tree Swallows appeared when the rain was heaviest, seeming to feed close to the marsh in great swirls with their feathers all puffed up to keep out the chill. Everything else was laying low except four Rusty Blackbirds that sat in a tree close by for a short time. In the afternoon, a few grackles snuck by, along with some Cedar Waxwings and two Red-bellied Woodpeckers. See today's eBird list http://ebird.org/ebird/canada/view/checklist?subID=S25579734 Predictions: Temperatures in the single digits (C) with strong, over 40kph winds from the SW. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jenna McDermott ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
