Highlights: There has been an interesting mix of shorebird activity this week, as well as a continued increase in raptor movement. Highlights of the week include SNOW GOOSE, BRANT, GOLDEN EAGLE, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, and EASTERN PALM WARBLER. Kingston A GOLDEN EAGLE was seen and photographed flying high over the west end of the city, in Reddendale, on 8th and an EASTERN or YELLOW PALM WARBLER was photographed at Lemoine Point the same day. A VESPER SPARROW was seen at the same location on 7th and a LINCOLN'S SPARROW was at Invista, also on 7th. Wolfe Island Somewhat unusual for the area considering the number of records outside of the circle, an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen at Reed's Bay on 8th. Despite habitat being suitable, no shorebirds have been noted at this location this week. Amherst Island In the channel between Amherst Island and the mainland, 29 BRANT were seen on 8th. However, it is the shorebirds at Martin Edwards Reserve that have been the highlight of the week with 2 HUDSONIAN GODWITS seen there on 7th and 3 on 8th when they were spooked by a PEREGRINE FALCON and last seen flying off towards the mainland. A LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER was also seen on 7th and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS have been seen on several dates with a respectable 16 seen there on 7th. Other shorebirds have included BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER (19), DUNLIN (34) and SANDERLING (1). Two AMERICAN WOODCOCK were seen in the Owl Woods on 8th. Please note that you must be a member of Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) or be accompanied by a member to access the Martin Edwards Reserve. Prince Edward County Another immature NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen this week, this time at Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory on 6th. Good numbers of SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS are also moving through as well as the odd COOPERS HAWK. Banding is slowing down at the observatory but now is the time to pay an evening visit if you wish to see Saw-whet Owls being banded; 16 were banded on the evening of 5th. The only ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER of the week was seen at the observatory on 6th. Other sightings At Bath Generating Station (no public access), 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS, 11 GREAT EGRETS and 150 RING-NECKED DUCKS were seen on 8th. At Bath itself, 2 SNOW GEESE were seen on 3rd. Two PINE SISKINS were seen on Washburn Road, near Sunbury, on 3rd but not since. A TRUMPETER SWAN was at Elbow Lake Environmental Centre on 4th. Please note that the ferry situation continues in our area and the expected return date of the Wolfe Islander is now 'unknown'. This means that the Wolfe Island, Amherst Island and Glenora ferries continue run at half capacity. Also, in case you missed the news, Amherstview Sewage Lagoons is currently closed to all access - hopefully reopening in October. In order to minimise disturbance to wildlife and property, Kingston Field Naturalists has adopted the KFN Sensitive Sightings Policy <http://kingstonfieldnaturalists.org/birding/KFN_sensitive_sightings_policy. pdf> . Also note that, as requested by the landowners, sightings of owls at the privately-owned Owl Woods must not be distributed on the Internet (this includes posting as 'Amherst Island' on eBird) by KFN or anyone who visits. To ensure continued access to this location, please respect their wishes and follow the guidelines posted on-site. To maintain records for conservation purposes, sightings from that location are welcomed through all the traditional channels. As always, thanks to all those who have submitted sightings over the last week. Mark. Mark D.
