Highlights: There has been a distinct increase in the number of autumn and winter visitors, but once again nothing truly notable has been seen. Highlights of the week include RED-NECKED GREBE, PEREGRINE FALCON, OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, and ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER. Kingston Kingston's resident PEREGRINE FALCON was seen downtown on 21st. A late OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was seen at Invista on 23rd where an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was also seen. A DARK-EYED JUNCO was seen there on 24th. Wolfe Island Big Sandy Bay has seen a number of winter 'firsts' this week, with RED-NECKED GREBE and WHITE-WINGED SCOTER seen at Bear Point on 22nd. WINTER WREN was seen the same day and DARK-EYED JUNCO was noted on 24th. ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS were seen at 3 locations on the island on 24th (Big Sandy Bay, Button Bay and the ferry dock), with other later migrants such as RUSTY BLACKBIRD, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, PALM WARBLER, AMERICAN PIPIT, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, and LINCOLN'S SPARROEW also showing up. Two SANDERLINGS were seen at Big Sandy Bay on 22nd and 24th and an AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER and 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were at Reed's bay, also on 24th. Other sightings SANDHILL CRANES were seen at a couple of locations (Frontenac Provincial Park (1) and Opinicon Road (2)) on 20th. An EASTERN WHIP-POOR-WILL was still calling at Bedford Mills as of 24th. Good numbers of migrating SWAINSON'S and GREY-CHEEKED THRUSHES were noted over Washburn Road on pre-dawn on 24th, where RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were seen on 25th. Please note that the ferry situation continues in our area and the expected return date of the Wolfe Islander is now 'unknown'. This means that the Wolfe Island, Amherst Island and Glenora ferries continue run at half capacity. Also, in case you missed the news, Amherstview Sewage Lagoons is currently closed to all access - hopefully reopening in October. In order to minimise disturbance to wildlife and property, Kingston Field Naturalists has adopted the KFN Sensitive Sightings Policy <http://kingstonfieldnaturalists.org/birding/KFN_sensitive_sightings_policy. pdf> . Also note that, as requested by the landowners, sightings of owls at the privately-owned Owl Woods must not be distributed on the Internet (this includes posting as 'Amherst Island' on eBird) by KFN or anyone who visits. To ensure continued access to this location, please respect their wishes and follow the guidelines posted on-site. To maintain records for conservation purposes, sightings from that location are welcomed through all the traditional channels. As always, thanks to all those who have submitted sightings over the last week. Mark. Mark D.
