Haze blurred the distant Canadian shoreline throughout. Puffy white clouds drifted into view by late afternoon, granting us a better spotting background and a hint of shade. The wind was light and out of the south. Raptor Observations: Quiet early, a midday rush of kestrels and sharpies kept us occupied well into the afternoon. Embedded among them were a couple high-flying Merlins, both gracious enough to pull up and provide more-than-fleeting glimpses. Ospreys and harriers, while not as abundant as recent outings, remained noticeable. Non-raptor Observations: Songbirds were moving in the morning, swallows chief among them: Purple Martin (160), Tree Swallow (294), Northern Rough-winged Swallow (27), Barn Swallow (4), Chimney Swift (7), American Goldfinch (60), Cedar Waxwing (59), Red-winged Blackbird (46), Baltimore Oriole (1), Northern Flicker (1), Ruby-throated Hummingbird (5), Mourning Dove (6), Monarch (8), Black Saddlebags (5), Green Darner (56) Predictions: Mostly cloudy skies with warm temps, moderate south wind and a small chance of morning showers. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
