Hi all. It appears a few follow- up comments are in order. A couple people have since emailed me to inform me that the bird we saw was almost certainly a leg-banded Double-crested Cormorant. The aluminum leg bands could appear bright white under the right light. This would also explain the size, and the fact we didn't see any white in the face. Also, I also learned that most Great Cormorants lose the white flank patch by mid-summer.
