Highlights: Things continue to pick up, with some great shorebird sightings and a continued increase in the number of warblers being seen. Highlights of the week include; SANDHILL CRANE, AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, STILT SANDPIPER, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, WESTERN SANDPIPER, NORTHERN PARULA, and RED CROSSBILL. Wolfe Island Unfortunately, no shorebird habitat is to be found on the island and with Lake Ontario as high as it is, things seem unlikely to change. Big Sandy Bay Management Area has, however, had some good warbler sightings this week with MOURNING WARBLER on a couple of dates, as many as 4 different CANADA WARBLERS on 3 dates, 2 WILSON'S WARBLERS on 26th, and an early NORTHERN PARULA on 23rd and 25th. Also seen there on 23rd were 2 BLUE-GREY GNATCHERS, an unusual species in this area, and good numbers of migrating EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE and LEAST FLYCATCHER. Prince Edward Point A record of 2 SWAINSON'S THRUSHES at Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory on 15th was perhaps a little early but the 4 VEERYS seen the same day were bang on schedule. On 26th, 14 species of warblers were tallied including 1 CANADA WARBLER, 1 BAY-BREASTED, 1 CAPE-MAY and 2 WILSON'S. An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was also seen as well as 2 BLUE-GREY GNATCATCHERS. Other sightings Three COMMON GOLDENEYES were seen at Camden Lake (near Yarker) on 27th. At Wilton Creek, near Napanee, shorebirds are still being seen. Missed from last week's report was a STILT SANDPIPER seen on 20th and 21st. This week, the best shorebirds have been a couple of SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS seen on 26th. Great Egrets have also been seen at this location. Three of 5 birds seen there on 27th had coloured leg bands but unfortunately couldn't be read. Up near Westport an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was seen on 22nd. At Cranberry Lake, near Brewer's Mills, another OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was seen this week, where the observer also racked up GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, 2 SANDHILL CRANES and a surprise RED CROSSBILL. On the nearby Washburn Road, 4 SWAINSON's THRUSHES were seen on 27th. Near Lansdowne, 4 SANDHILL CRANES were seen on 26th. At Charleston Lake Provincial Park, both GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER and BAY-BREASTED WARBLER were observed on 26th. Stateside Some very good sightings came in from across the border in Jefferson County, NY. This afternoon, 28th, the WESTERN SANDPIPER was again seen - this time with 5 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS. On 27th, an AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER was present; on 26th a SANDERLING and 2 STILT SANDPIPERS were found. An early BUFFLEHAD was seen on 22nd. Please note that the ferry situation continues in our area and the expected return date of the Wolfe Islander is now 'unknown'. This means that the Wolfe Island, Amherst Island and Glenora ferries continue be at half capacity. Also, in case you missed the news, Amherstview Sewage Lagoons is currently closed to all access - hopefully reopening in October. In order to minimise disturbance to wildlife and property, Kingston Field Naturalists has adopted the KFN Sensitive Sightings Policy <http://kingstonfieldnaturalists.org/birding/KFN_sensitive_sightings_policy. pdf> . Also note that, as requested by the landowners, sightings of owls at the privately-owned Owl Woods must not be distributed on the Internet (this includes posting as 'Amherst Island' on eBird) by KFN or anyone who visits. To ensure continued access to this location, please respect their wishes and follow the guidelines posted on-site. To maintain records for conservation purposes, sightings from that location are welcomed through all the traditional channels. As always, thanks to all those who have submitted sightings over the last week. Mark. Mark D.
