In case any Ontario birders are interested in a sighting a short drive from the
border:

Just an update on the Black-backed Woodpecker seen at Reinstein Woods Nature
Preserve in Depew, NY (a Buffalo suburb). Many people visited Reinstein Woods
today in hope of relocating the bird photographed on Tuesday. It is my
understanding that no one was able to find the bird today (Thursday, May 28).
The photos were taken from the boardwalk near the visitor's center at preserve.
Photos of the bird were posted to the Buffalo and WNY Wildlife Photography
page, and then linked to the Buffalo-Niagara Rare Bird page on Facebook (photos
by Kathleen Thomas).

That being said, I suspect a lot of folks will continue to search for the
bird over the next few days. Please share sighting info on the Genesee and NY
listserves, eBird, BOS 1 Call, and WNY Text Alert. This is a great bird for
Western New York, and likely a life bird for many local birders. In addition,
please adhere to the ABA's birding ethics: be considerate of the bird (i.e. try
not to approach too closely, consider not broadcasting calls), be considerate
of other birders, stay on trails, etc. You can view the full code here:
http://www.aba.org/about/ethics.html

A few final words. Better birders than I suspect the woodpecker may have
been around for some time (and hopefully will reappear and stick around -
earlier this year, a Black-backed Woodpeckerny was seen in Boston, MA for
several months). Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve is located at 93 Honorine Dr,
Depew, NY, 14043.

Best of luck if you head out for the bird!
