While walking the Hamilton-Cambridge rail trail Tuesday morning, I found a pair of Yellow-rumped Warblers 50 metres north of the rail trail parking lot in Glen Morris. If you follow the rail trail north from the parking lot, about 100 metres north of the overhead bridge crossing the Grand in Glen Morris, you will find several pine trees. The Pine Warbler was calling from the pines on the river side of the rail trail.
To get to the Glen Morris rail trail parking lot, follow the East River Road into Glen Morris. You will find the Glen Morris Library in the centre of the village. Forbes street is directly across from the Library and Forbes Street will take you quickly to the rail trail parking lot. While walking the rail trail from the Footbridge, just off Highway 24 at about kilometre 73 on the rail trail, back to Glen Morris, I also found a pair of Wood Ducks, a pair of Trumpeter Swans and 4 Osprey among other more common birds. The one pair of Osprey are now occupying the nest on the south communications tower that can be seen from the intersection of the East River Road and Highway 24. If you go to see that nest, do not look from the intersection at the northerly tower which is more obvious. The communications tower to the south is on the east side of Highway 24 in the direction of Brantford. You may wish to position yourself on the rail trail (which is on the west side of the intersection). If you walk a few metres north along the rail trail you should be able to find a place to see the tower without looking through the trees. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
