After a year of record numbers of bald eagle sightings along the Niagara River, it looks as though this may no longer be worthy of an Ontbird Alert. With the Strawberry Island nesting site and many others being reported in Western New York, it would appear that bald eagles have achieved the status of 'regular resident' in Niagara. With that said, if anyone is still interested in adding this to your Niagara River search list this winter:A bald eagle pair can be sighted daily along the Niagara River, just north of Fort Erie, in the vicinity of Strawberry Island and the International Rail Bridge. A shot from this morning: http://s26.postimg.org/hf41itfrt/IMG_3755_2d.jpg(hosted online)DIRECTIONS:Travel into Fort Erie along the QEW and be sure to exit at Central Avenue (if you miss this exit, you will need to cross the Peace Bridge into Buffalo!). Turn right (south) onto Central Avenue and it quickly ends at Lakeshore Road. Turn left (north) and follow Lakeshore Road, which becomes the Niagara River Parkway. Continue 3 km north until you pass under the International Rail Bridge and the eagles can usually be found anywhere along the next 1 km stretch, or off to the right circling over Strawberry Island in the centre of the Niagara River. GPS destination: 42.928624, -78.913509 (underpass of International Rail Bridge). _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
