I woke up this morning a little ‘under the weather’, sothought a day of birding may help. So Iain Rayner and I headed to Prince EdwardCounty and spent much of the day birding western shorelines in the county. We managed to find some late migrantsincluding some Tundra Swans at Wellington harbour, a Ruby-crowned Kinglet atLittle Bluff CA, a Northern Shrike and two Snowy Owls (1 sitting on ice ateastern end of Murray Canal and another perched in tree on small island inWellers Bay). But the big highlights of the day were a Red Phalarope and aHarlequin Duck. The Red Phalarope wasobserved swimming in the surf close to shore at North Beach (west end of CountyRoad 27). The Harlequin Duck was animmature/female observed on west side of West Point (Sandbanks PP). Iain managed some good photos of both andwill try to post on ebird tonight. Inthe end we managed just over 40 species, and, not surprisingly, I felt a lotbetter too!Prince Edward County can be found by taking Hwy 401 toCounty Road 40/33 (exit 522); continue south through town of CarryingPlace. To get to the North Beach, takeCounty Road 33 approx. 10km south ofCarrying Place to County Rd 27 – go west until you reach the lake. The REPH was approx. 100m south adjacent towhere the road turns into a dirt path that goes onto the beach. To get to theHADU, take County Road 33 south of Bloomfield, go SW on County Road 12 toLakeshore Lodge Road. HADU was found onwestern shore adjacent to the small picnic area. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
