Visibility was around 4km and cloud cover broke up in the afternoon. Raptor Observations: It certainly was a day full of surprises on the raptor front! Everything was progressing as one might expect, with Northern Harriers and Red-tailed Hawks in the morning, adding in a Cooper's Hawk and a few Turkey Vultures, and then 1pm hit. A Golden Eagle flew along the north shore of the marsh, being harried by a couple of Red-tails. An American Kestrel, a Merlin and a Peregrine Falcon all showed up during the hour, and just when the excitement was going to be over, an Osprey floated up from the eastern forest. That makes 2 very late Osprey in less than a week! Non-raptor Observations: Some Tundra Swans continued to fly over the marsh, with 6 (4 adults, 2 juveniles) sticking around for a while. Two groups of 3 Hooded Mergansers landed in the trout pond before carrying on their way. Starlings, Cedar Waxwings, American Robins, Red-winged Blackbirds and American Goldfinches made up the large passerine numbers for the day. See today's eBird list http://ebird.org/ebird/canada/view/checklist?subID=S20590516 Predictions: -8C in the morning, feeling like -18C when the 40km/h SW wind is taken into consideration. A little bit of sun through the day should make the afternoon warm up a few degrees. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jenna McDermott ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
