Observers: Cary Graham, Ches Caister, Clive Hodder, Dave Verkley,

Ronnie Goodhand, Tom Bolohan, Winston Celik
Visitors:
There were a pile of visitors today...Rose W. from Dutton; Peter & Barbara
J.John, Rick, Doug, Mike, Jim L. and Fran R. from Buffalo and many others.
Thanks to everyone for their help today and all the gang of volunteer
observers and counters.
Weather:
Lots of sunshine as expected which made it difficult to spot birds but
allowed the temp to get to a high of 7C. The winds were lighter today but
continued from the NNW for the day.
Raptor Observations:
Another stellar flight and in fact even better than yesterday's with a
total of 2,411 birds. The bulk of today's flight was Redtails (1,402) and
TVs (651) along with Red-shoulders (227). The highlights included another
41 Golden Eagles (wow!), 4 Goshawks and another 3 Roughlegs. Other species
included Bald Eagle (13), N. Harrier (9), Sharpies (40), Cooper's Hawks
(16), Kestrels (2) and some very late Broadwings (3).
Non-raptor Observations:
Thanks to Cary for her early bird observations this morning including 6
Horned Grebes right below the cliff; later, a lone Pied-billed was spotted
from the cliff, diving for a meal as well as a few Bonaparte's and
Ring-billed Gulls plus some Mergansers flying low across the water.
Species seen from our observation spots at Sharpie Alley and later, the B&B
were Sandhill Cranes, Killdeer, 2 Snow Geese, 1 Common Loon, Crows along
with 2 Ravens), Red-winged Blackbirds, E. Starlings, E. Bluebirds and PIne
Siskins. Along the road and just inside the woods were some Purple
finches, BC Chickadees, Am. Goldfinch, Hairy & Red-bellied Woodpecker,
Cedar Waxwings (many!), Am. Robins (also quite a few), a Yellow-rumped
Warbler, Northern Cardinal, Blue Jay and 2 Mourning Dove.
Amazingly, several observers reported seeing Meadowhawk dragonflies today
and at the B&B observers also noted a Clouded Sulphur Butterfly!
Predictions:
Strong SW winds forecast for Monday will tend to push the birds inland away
from the hawkwatch so even though I expect birds will be on the move there
won't likely be too many that are spotted at the hawkwatch.
