Dan and Mary from Kingsville also stopped by in the hopes of seeing the pelican. A man with his grandson, who was very interested in looking through binoculars and a scope, spent some time on the tower as well. Weather: A lovely autumn day on the tower, warm (18C) and winds between 3 and 16km/h. Cloud cover was perfect for viewing birds, but the winds were coming from the ESE, SE, and E all day. Raptor Observations: These winds brought a very slow raptor day, with 13 being the most raptors coming through in an hour, not including Turkey Vultures. Even they were not very abundant, with 85 for the day. We did have a couple of Red-tailed Hawks and Cooper's Hawks that came fairly close to the tower which was really nice to see. One Golden Eagle zoomed through at the far north side of the marsh, it certainly seemed in a hurry! Non-raptor Observations: Ducks were having a grand old time in the marsh as usual, as well as the swans, egrets and herons. Less Cormorants were seen today (14) than there have been recently. There was some movement of gulls in the morning along with crows and Red-winged Blackbirds, but passerines pretty well stopped flying after the first few hours of count. The excitement of the day was when the American White Pelican that was seen landing in the marsh yesterday flew out again and headed East along the shoreline! See today's eBird list http://ebird.org/ebird/canada/view/checklist?subID=S20357531 Predictions: A bit of rain through the day with winds of 35km/h from the SW and W. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jenna McDermott ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
