Long Point Bird Observatory Sightings Board - Oct 19 to 24, 2014.

It was another exciting week in the Long Point area. Waterfowl numbers continue
to build with greater than 30,000 waterfowl of most species on the Inner and
Outer Bays. Numbers of Tundra Swans and Sandhill Cranes are also slowly
starting to build. Raptor movements have been steady following north and
northwest winds late this week with more Northern Harrier, adult Accipiter,
Red-shouldered Hawk, and of course Northern Saw-whet Owls moving through the
region. Long-eared Owls also made a good showing at the Tip. Passerine
migration has been slow on the ground, but thousands of diurnal migrant robins,
pipits, and siskins have filled the skies most mornings. The river of
blackbirds is flowing steadily and approaching half a million birds as they
make their way from the mainland to Long Point over Old Cut each evening.
