Today a bunch of folks came out to the Hill to see for themselves if we could
possibly get 3 good days of hawkwatching in a row.
And you others, well I guess you're all still waiting for today's result?

Well, the answer is.........

Nope.

So here's what we saw instead:

Turkey Vultures 214
Bald Eagle 1
Sharpshin 6
Red Shoulder 2
Red Tail 66
Golden Eagle 1
Unid. Buteo 3

Total 293

Both Red Tails and Turkey vultures were really far up in a mostly blue sky. I
had trouble seeing them with the bins let alone the naked eye. Now I know why
they made me the counter.
Some of those guys I swear have telescopic vision. What might help for you if
you find yourself in my situation is if you're wearing polaroids (and everybody
who watches out in the sun for hours should) to switch the polaroid sunglasses
for your regular clear ones for a while. That worked for me but then I got sore
eyes from too much sun.
Some of our new folks got a thrill today when they saw a Golden Eagle for the
first time. Most can't believe how big it is. Like a nail keg slung under an
ironing board. If you ever want to see one of these guys close up try the main
gallery of the R.O.M. There's a stuffed specimen there that you shouldn't miss.
The Cityworkers are tantalisingly close to opening the Grenadier Restaurant
Parking lot. They still had not painted the lines when we left today. This
probably means no parking lot this weekend.
The colours of the leaves are staggeringly beautiful though. Try not to miss
them as this will probably be the last weekend of the season.
Good Birding,
Tim
