On occasion an unobstructed sun peeked through to warm us slightly. The wind was light and out of the northwest early, shifting west later. Raptor Observations: After mid morning lift off, a steady stream of Turkey Vultures wobbled their usual trajectory, stretching from Canada to the stacks with little interruption throughout the afternoon. Red-shouldered Hawks joined their Red-tailed compatriots in better numbers today. But it's the fairly large number of late Broad-winged Hawks that continues to surprise. Non-raptor Observations: Blue Jay (2500+), American Crow (1500+), Red-winged Blackbird (450+), Tree Swallow (350+), Rusty Blackbird (20+), Pine Siskin (130+), Horned Lark (6), Northern Flicker (3), Bonaparte's Gull (80+), Forster's Tern (30+), Gadwall (2) Predictions: Mostly cloudy with moderate southwest wind and a 70 percent chance of rain. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
