Wait five minutes and it'll change. That pithy saying sums up today quite well. The sky was awash in shifting shades of blue, white and gray throughout. And the wind was equally as temperamental, frequently alternating between westerly and easterly. Toward the end of the watch, the clouds began to darken and dumped some fairly heavy rain on us, ending the count a little earlier than normal. Raptor Observations: Our first Golden Eagle of the season circled low and close behind us for a short time during the early afternoon. Today also featured our first double-digit Red-shouldered Hawk flight of the season. Not bad for what was looking like a potential washout earlier in the day. Non-raptor Observations: American Crow (75+), Blue Jay (600+), Red-winged Blackbird (120+), Rusty Blackbird (8), Pine Siskin (2), American Wigeon (2) Predictions: Mostly cloudy with strong west wind. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
