Weather: Winds came from the S and E throughout the day with almost complete cloud cover after the first 2 hours. It was pleasant weather, with the temperature going up to 22C. Raptor Observations: Around 10-20 raptors were coming through each hour until we had a few small kettles of Turkey Vultures during midday which bumped the numbers up a fair amount. We ended up with 8 species migrating. The excitement came near the end of the count when a flock of Blue Jays dropped to the tree cover and a Peregrine Falcon zoomed out of nowhere, tried noisily for a Jay in a tree and flew off again in a great hurry. No lunch for it there today, but the Blue Jays sure took their time lifting off again. Non-raptor Observations: Monarchs had a great day today, 186 going by! American Goldfinches were also in abundant numbers with 252, and we had a nice 15110 Blue Jays. 5 Killdeer spent around an hour flying in circles around the marsh, making their presence know, before they finally headed out. See today's eBird list http://ebird.org/ebird/canada/view/checklist?subID=S20010822 Predictions: Winds at 40-45km/h from the S and W with potential thunderstorms or rain in the morning. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jenna McDermott ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
