Weather: The sky was once again a gorgeous deep BLUE with minimal cloud cover, but at least most of the birds were lower. Winds were moderate for the day from basically E to SE and somewhere in between. Raptor Observations: Wellâ¦Another sloooow day. In the first two hours, we had just one Sharpie. Things picked up a bit in the next 2 hours but slowed again at noon and we ended the count at 1.00 EDT. Mary returned to the Cliff at 3.00 to 4.30 EDT and added the 18 birds for these final hours. Total birds for the day was only 142...with mostly Sharpies (99) along with a smattering of other species...TVs (6), Osprey (2), N. Harriers (8), Cooper's Hawks (5), a small number of buteos with Broadwings (5) and Redtails (2), Kestrels (15) and a lone Peregrine. Non-raptor Observations: Thanks to observers on the knoll for a sighting of a Great Black-backed Gull, 1 Common Loon, numerous Canada Geese, a couple of Northern Flickers, about 3000 Blue Jays between starting time and 11:00 AM and flocks of migrating American Goldfinches. Besides the Flickers we had 3 other Woodpecker species including Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Red-bellied and Hairy Woodpeckers. Other highlights were 2 species of Wren (Carolina and House), House Finch, 1 Wood Duck, Eastern Bluebirds at Roberts Ln, many Catbirds, an Eastern Towhee ad 6 Warbler species including Blackburnian, Palm, Bay-breasted, Blackpoll, Black & White and Tennessee. The Monarch count yielded modest numbers today; nevertheless, those Monarchs kept up all day long, with 51 being counted as they crossed the field between 2:00 and 3:00 PM. A few were still moving through at 3:30 PM as the last observer left the mound. What's more, Black Saddlebags (dragonflies) were also still crossing the field at the end of the day. Other Dragonfly species spotted today were Common Green Darner and several 12-spotted Skimmers. Predictions: Unfortunately, the promise of northerly winds has disappeared and are now forecast to be light and generally E and SE for the next few days. This will definitely minimize the movement along the lake shore. We need another strong cold front to pass through to get everything moving again. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Dave Brown ([email protected]) Hawk Cliff Hawkwatch information may be found at: http://www.ezlink.on.ca/~thebrowns/HawkCliff/index.htm
