Tim Mccarthy via Ontbirds.
Well, I said I was only going to report the good days. Some of the other sites
had good days. We had WSW winds and a total of 15 Broadwings. These birds can't
afford to wait around up North or their food hibernates. So they must have been
coming through somewhere. How about the old Lake Iroquois shoreline? It makes a
ridgeline clear across the north of Toronto doesn't it? The time is so short
and we are so few. How about some help from everybody? Anybody. Lets do some
Citizen Science. You don't have to come to High Park. Just look up when you're
getting into your car tomorrow morning or wherever you are. Look way up as far
into the clouds as you can see and tell me tomorrow if you see pepper. That
pepper in the clouds is a flock or "kettle" of Broadwinged Hawks. We need to
find out which route they take in South or East wind weather conditions when
they're not flying over High Park. So if you see them please note the time and
place and send me an email. We're going to find the secret
of the Broadwinged Hawks this year.
Not too many watchers showed up at the Park today. Just the hard-core guys.
(The ones who don't work). I hope the rest of you didn't stay home today just
because I forgot to give the location of High Park in yesterday's report. It
is, ahem, West off Keele Street just south of Bloor. Drive in and park at the
Grenadier Restaurant parking lot. Or get off at the High Park subway station
and walk South. Now tomorrow is supposed to have North Winds all day so it
should bring out the broadwings. Today was so bad that when lunch came out it
was the highpoint of our day. I saw more chicken wings than broadwings.
Good Birding,
Tim
