Hi there,

Today (17 September) from 0910 - 0950 h, I observed 9 Lesser Black-backed
Gulls at the Trail Road Waste Facility. Of the 9 included: 5 adults, 3
second-cycle, and 1 first-cycle. To note, this was a careful count and most
likely a conservative one. From the great mass of gulls present, I imagine
that number could easily be doubled.

I was joined by Bruce Di Labio and we studied the gulls together. As an
aside, Bruce discovered an interesting gull which we, at the time,
hypothesized could have been of Herring x Lesser Black-backed lineage.

I have uploaded some images of the LBBG's and a few photos of the putative
hybrid (comments welcome for those interested in speculating the origin of
this gull) on my blog site.

Directions (as per those available on neilyworld.com): From Highway 416
take exit 66 (Fallowfield Road). If southbound, a 0.4 km offramp dumps onto
Fallowfield, where you will turn right or west. If northbound, the 0.4 km
offramp brings you to Fallowfield, where you will turn left or west onto it
and in 0.5 km join the southbound offramp traffic. Both groups will now
follow Fallowfield Road west for an additional 0.4 km to reach Moodie
Drive. Turn left or southeast onto Moodie Drive and go 4.0 km to Cambrian
Road. Turn left or ENE on Cambrian and almost immediately veer right or
southeast on Trail Road the site of the Nepean Dump. The entrance is 1.0 km
east on Trail, on the left.

Good birding,
Jon Ruddy
