Lingering throughout, a touch of distant haze limited visibility out toward Canada. Overhead, a few puffy white clouds hung around all day, granting us a slightly better spotting sky than yesterday. The wind was light and mostly out of the west and southwest. Raptor Observations: Outside a brief burst of birds during the early afternoon there was little movement to speak of. Interestingly, mixed in with the feisty Merlin, distant Redtail and high-flying harriers comprising that early afternoon flurry, was a first year Red-shouldered Hawk, our earliest record for this species since 2002. Non-raptor Observations: Purple Martin (13), Chimney Swift (6), Spotted Sandpiper (1), Eastern Wood Pewee (1), Baltimore Oriole (1), Warbling Vireo (1), Cedar Waxwing (7), American Goldfinch (27), Wood Duck (2), Great Blue Heron (2), Double-crested Cormorant (1500+) Predictions: There's a 70 percent chance of rain in the morning. The afternoon looks good, though, with partly cloudy skies and moderate north wind. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
