Recent reports to July 10, 2014 The early shorebird migration has started but high water levels throughout our area makes finding habitat for these birds difficult. - Carp River flood plain just south of Carp: LESSER (6) and GREATER (1) YELLOWLEGS - Winchester lagoons on the 9th: LEAST (40) and SPOTTED (3) SANDPIPER, LESSER YELLOWLEGS (24), SNOW GOOSE (1), RUDDY (1 m) and RING-NECKED (1) DUCK - Embrun Lagoons (extensive construction underway weekdays): LESSER (3) and GREATER (1) YELLOWLEGS and AMERICAN WIGEON (2) - CASSELMAN lagoons on the 9th: LEAST (80), SPOTTED (7+) and SOLITARY (1), LESSER (8) and GREATER (1) YELLOWLEGS, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER (1), RUDDY DUCK (pair) - Moodie Dr ponds (south of Trail Rd) on the 10th: SOLITARY (4) and LEAST (3) SANDPIPER - Alfred lagoon (east of the OFNC area) on the 8th: SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER (2) Interesting sightings: - Moodie Dr quarry pond south of Trail Rd on the 10th: RING-NECKED (1 m) and RUDDY (1 m) DUCK, GADWALL (1), LESSER BLACK-BACKED (1 3rd year) and GREAT BLACK-BACKED (1) GULL, CASPIAN (2) and COMMON (5) TERN and PIED-BILLED GREBE (3) - Conroy Island in the Deschenes rapids: at least 2 GREAT EGRET nests with 2 to 4 juveniles, many DOUBLE-CREASTED CORMORANT nests, 8 juvenile BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON and many RING-BILLED GULLS - Russell lagoons on the 8th: NORTHERN SHOVELER (3), PIED-BILLED GREBE (2), COMMON GALLINULE (1), RUDDY DUCK (3) and AMERICAN COOT (1) - Corkstown marsh (north of the equestrian farm) on the 5th: Sedge Wren continue, BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON and GREEN HERON and BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO - a CAROLINA WREN was singing in Alta Vista (Wesmar Dr) on the 8th There are large numbers of a variety of swallows at the Casselman lagoons and on the 9th at the Deschenes rapids there were BANK (150), BARN (40), CLIFF (75), NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED (12) with CHIMNEY SWIFT (60). Due to widespread concerns regarding disturbance of wildlife and property, the OFNC's Birds Committee no longer reports OWL sightings on the internet.
