Hello, A small group of young birders enjoyed searching for breeding birds and nests at the spit this morning. We saw or heard 55 species including several late migrants such as Blackpoll Warblers, a female American Restart and Swainson's Thrush.
We found several nests including a mostly completed Pewee nest, a Warbling Vireo with a vireo nestled on the nest, Yellow Warbler, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Eastern Kingbird and a Red-winged Blackbird female feeding four hungry downy nestlings. All sightings will be posted on eBird and the nest records will be submitted to the Ontario Nest Records scheme and BSC Nest watch. A big thank you to Nigel at the bird banding station for teaching us about the Eastern Kingbird's red crown and some of the finer points of understanding how old a bird is. Also thank you to Ian Sturdie who passed on great tips on finding and recording nests.
