After seeing the Ross' Goose at the Welland Canal in Port Colborne this
afternoon with a number others, my son and I decided to head towards
Fisherville in hopes of seeing Short-eared Owls. With the snow coming down
pretty good and the light fading quick we were not sure we could make it there
before dark. Luckily we happened to see two Short-eared Owls flying over a
field west of Dunnville. We ended up watching them for close to 15 minutes as
they flew around, hovered against the wind and snow, and perched on the fences.
The two birds were seen on the south side of Hwy 3 (Rainham Road),
approximately 220 m east of Aiken Road. This is approximately 4.12 km west of
the Grand River along Hwy 3. We never made it to Fisherville after all. A great
day nevertheless!
