I was out to Kelly Lake this morning and saw the white-phase Gyrfalcon. It was
the third time I've gone to look this winter, but the first time I'd seen
either the white-phase or gray-phase; sightings are certainly not guaranteed.
As far as I know, Gyrfalcons at Kelly Lake (this winter and during winters
past) have virtually invariably been seen at the northeast end of the lake,
where the Southview Drive bridge crosses the creek between Kelly Lake and
Robinson Lake. From the bridge, look north across a large reedy area, through
which a small river flows. The river should be open, though not visible from
the bridge. This is where the ducks gather, as the lake is entirely frozen.
The Gyrfalcons may be seen sitting on the rocks to the north of the river, in
one of the few trees along the river (as was the white-phase earlier today),
or, if you're lucky, on a utility pole along Southview Drive.
Hope that helps,
David Scott
