Hi everyone,
I just wanted to clarify the situation regarding the interesting adult
"yellow-legged" gull that has been seen on the Niagara River recently. This
gull has now been seen on three occasions by numerous observers over the past
two weeks resting on the breakwall just north of the control gates, always in
the mid-afternoon. Although this gull shows many features typical of a
Yellow-legged Gull it also shows a few characters that perhaps make an American
Herring Gull X Lesser Black-backed Gull hybrid seem as likely. We are in the
process of contacting numerous European gull experts and have thus far received
mixed reviews, but with more comments expected. The bottom line at the moment
is that no-one is 100% sure what it is!
It's an interesting gull that is certainly worth making an effort to see if you
happen to be birding the Niagara River…
Cheers and good birding,
Dave Beadle
