Further to Alan's message, here is a much better way to get to Squaw Island
State Park.
Once you have cleared the US customs on the Peace Bridge in Fort Erie
immediately go to the right and just before the I190 South access there is
an exit on the right hand side for Niagara Street. Take this exit and
continue north on Niagara Street for perhaps 3 or 4 miles to the Squaw
Island entrance on your left. Along the way you will pass a number of
lights and a fork in the road....Niagara Street is the left fork. Look for
a small sign with the park name on it....just before the railway bridge.
Turn left at the sign (entrance) and the road initially runs along the side
of the railway bridge. Continue driving towards to river and the road will
veer to the right going under the bridge. Ultimately at the end is the
parking area. Look north for the path that takes you out to the tip of the
pier.
Good luck to those that go looking for this rarity.

Subject: [Ontbirds] Elegant Tern
Ontario birders would be wise to go over to the New York side to get
stunning views of the Elegant Tern. Not only that, but you are then in a
better position to judge if the bird enters Ontario airspace.
This morning (with others) I was at the Squaw Island pier from 8:00 to 11:30
a.m. During this period we believe the bird entered Ontario only ONCE, and
that was around mid-morning or so. Best to look at Google Maps to see where
the boundary actually is, and also look at the length of the pier which is a
good yardstick to use when you are actually standing there.
Getting to Squaw Island is a bit complicated, but this is the route I took:
-- after crossing the Peace Bridge, follow the signs for the Niagara Parkway
(190) going NORTH
-- soon take the Scajaquada Expressway (merge right)
-- on the Scajaquada Expressway take the first exit (Grant Street); after
exiting then turn left at the light
-- get back on the Scajaquada Expressway (enter right) and backtrack towards
the Niagara Parkway
-- take the first exit (exit right); follow the sign for Niagara Street
-- after about a block you need to cross left OVER Niagara Street to enter
the Squaw Island Park entrance (stay alert on this one!)
-- cross the railway bridge and proceed as far north as possible in the park
to the last parking area, then proceed out onto the pier.
Very little bridge traffic at 7:30 a.m., but VERY busy entering New York
when I left at 11:30 a.m.
Don`t forget your passport!
