KING EIDER (4 adult females, 3 together resting and one on it's own feeding)
were found on the Ottawa River at Andrew Haydon Park on the morning of the
13th. The flock of three flew south soon after they were found but the single
bird continues today (14th) foraging close to shore in the Britannia Pier to
Andrew Haydon west area. The more recent records of KING EIDER in our area were
single birds in 1993, 87, 75 and 69.

A BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE (1st winter) was seen briefly just east of the
Deschenes Rapids and to the east of the Dick Bell breakwater on the 10th.
PURPLE SANDPIPER (1) was also seen briefly on the rocks at the end of the Dick
Bell Park breakwater that day.

An extremely late ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK (adult male) was found on the 13th on
the eastern edge of the Hillsdale Park ravine in Rockcliffe Park just south of
Hillsdale Rd and the Rockcliffe Pkwy.

Three very keen local birders worked hard to find 61 species on the 11th.
AMERICAN WOODCOCK was seen and other interesting sightings were RED-THROATED
and COMMON LOON, all 3 SCOTER, CACKLING and SNOW GOOSE, LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULL, BALD EAGLE, RED-TAILED and ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, NORTHERN HARRIER, DUNLIN
and GREATER YELLOWLEGS.

RED-THROATED LOON have been seen from Dick Bell Park and the Shirleys Bay boat
launch (5 adult winter plumage on the 11th).

Interesting sightings this week were: SNOW GOOSE (1000+) from Hwy 417 west of
Casselman, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE (m) at Ottawa Beach, HERMIT THRUSH near Ogilvie
RD and the Rockcliffe Pkwy, BELTED KINGFISHER at Shirleys Bay on the 13th and
BOHEMIAN WAXWING (50-80) in Carleton Place near Town Line Rd and Joseph St.

Thank you to everyone who contributed bird observations!
