HUDSONIAN GODWIT (1 molting adult and 1 worn juv) were found on the 3rd on the
shore of the north Giroux Rd pond. The birds were last reported on the 6th but
may still be present. At this location that day were also: CANADA GOOSE,
MALLARD, GREEN-WINGED TEAL (5), LESSER SCAUP (5), BUFFLEHEAD (1), COMMON
MERGANSER (2), RED-TAILED HAWK (1), GREATER YELLOWLEGS (4), DUNLIN (5) and
PECTORAL SANDPIPER (6). NORTHERN PINTAIL (24) were present on the 5th and a few
more on the 6th.
ROSS'S GOOSE (1 juv) was seen briefly on the Carp River flood plain south of
Carp on the 4th.
The OFNC birding trip on the 3rd searched for waterfowl and shorebirds along
the Ottawa River and on the Rideau River at Chapman Mills Conservation Area. 33
people enjoyed 48 species including: BARROW'S GOLDENEYE (1 m), HORNED and
RED-NECKED GREBE, COMMON, HOODED and RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, WHITE-WINGED and
BLACK SCOTER, GREATER and LESSER SCAUP, BRANT (1), ICELAND GULL (1 seen briefly
overhead), NORTHERN PINTAIL, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, DUNLIN and GREATER YELLOWLEGS
(1).
The Chapman Mills Conservation Area on the Rideau River on Prince of Wales just
north of the new Strandherd Dr bridge continues to be a good spot for excellent
views of PECTORAL SANDPIPER (up to 42 on the 4th), DUNLIN (up to 6 on the 1st),
GREATER YELLOWLEGS (1) and a good variety of waterfowl.
The Moodie Rd quarry ponds (south of Trail Rd) continue to be active with many
species including RUDDY DUCK (170+ on the 2nd), SNOW (6) and CACKLING (2) GOOSE
on the 7th.
Dow's Lake continues to be an interesting spot for a few shorebirds and a
variety of waterfowl. On the 29th there was a SOLITARY SANDPIPER (1) which is
probably a record late for this area and may be the 2nd latest for Ontario.
LONG-TAILED DUCK (1 f) was present on the 7th.
The Rushmore Rd, Eagleson Rd and Fallowfield Rd area continues to have a good
variety of gulls, CANADA and SNOW GEESE, SNOW BUNTING (20+ on the 2nd),
AMERICAN PIPIT and HORNED LARK on the fields with corn stubble. LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL (4) were seen on the 2nd.
TRUMPETER SWAN (2 adult and 2 juv), descendants of reintroduced birds, were
seen on the Mississippi River near the hwy 7 bridge west of Carleton Place on
the 4th. These are likely the adults that have breed on the Jock River in the
Carleton Place area for the last few years.
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE (1 m) last reported at Britannia Point on the 5th may still
be present and a male reported today with COMMON GOLDENEYE (70+) at the Rideau
