Total observation time: 8 hours
Official Counter: Todd Pepper
Observers: Claude Radley, Jeanice Seals, Jim McCoy, Olga Klekner,
Phyllis Coble, Roland Klekner
Visitors:
The tower was busy today with our 2 friends from Tennessee; Greg from
Windsor who usually only comes out on Mondays; 2 lay sisters from the
Madonna House; Ross Wood from Burlington who came out to see the Glossy
Ibis and picked up one of the Northern Goshawks; Rob from Gross Pointe, MI;
and 4 Amherstburg residents.
A special thanks to Olga for assisting in picking up those distant birds
with her 15 x 50 binoculars.
Weather:
Completely fogged in during the 1st hour of the count. I could see up to
clear skies, but less than 50 metres in any other direction. When the sun
did come out it burned off the fog quickly to reveal a cloudless sky. The
temperature ranged from 3.5 - 16C. The winds were light out of the South
all day from 2 - 7 km/hr.
Raptor Observations:
It was a tough day of hawk watching as almost all the birds were 2 - 6
kilometres to the north in haze and had to be scoped to ID them to species.
We did end up with a half decent number of 963 birds for the day of 9
species.
Non-raptor Observations:
A slower non-raptor day today with only 9,523 birds of 21 species counted.
Today was the best day of the season for mixed warbler flocks that totalled
843 birds. I did manage to pick out 1 adult male American Redstart and 2
"BayPolls". New for the count year was: Redhead (1); Northern Pintail (1);
Greater Lesserlegs (1); and Short-billed Dowitcher (8). The "blackbirds"
mostly flew in separate species flocks today. The Glossy Ibis, not seen for
the last 2 days, reappeared around 1000 and at the end of the day was back
in the same spot where it was late Friday afternoon when I last saw it.
Predictions:
Not looking good. An 80 - 90% chance of rain in both the a.m. and p.m. and
winds out of the SW at 35 km/hr gusting to 60 km/hr. It is going to be warm
at 15 - 16C and humid at 100%. Some Falcons and Harriers may fly, but don't
expect many other species. The potential for north winds has been pushed
back to Sunday now.
