My apologies for the late report, the original post was inadvertently sent to the old Ontbirds address.
On October 19th at 5pm a 1st yr. WHITE-EYED VIREO was seen very briefly in my garden near Merrickville eastern Ontario. I so happened to be photographing birds (a Ruby-crowned Kinglet) when the bird popped into the open just two feet from me. I immediately knew it was something interesting, so I automatically switched my camera to it and quite literally identified it the same moment I pressed the shutter release! My movement and the camera noise being to close to the bird spooked it. I was so stunned by what I thought I just saw, I had to first check my camera....and sure enough, I managed to get two frames, not great shots, but clearly a White-eyed Vireo! I had no idea which direction the bird had flown. But, having at least one fairly decent documentary shot, I didn¹t bother pursuing it any further....wow, talk about unexpected, quite a yard bird to have in this neck of the woods!! Good birding, Gerard Phillips. Merrickville Ontario. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
