Temperatures continued to be mild. The wind was moderate and out of the southwest. Raptor Observations: A slow morning turned into a livelier afternoon with peregrines aplenty and the addition of our first Rough-legged Hawk, a dark morph cooperative enough to cross high overhead. As is often the case, falcons found the southwest winds irresistible. American Kestrel returned to the count sheet. Two more Merlin were added. And the six peregrines tallied were a new single-day season high. Also: we have now eclipsed our previous Bald Eagle season high count and it's still only mid-October. Non-raptor Observations: Red-winged Blackbird (1500+), Horned Lark (3), House Finch (4), Yellow-rumpled Warbler (20+), Dark-eyed Junco (6) Predictions: Mostly cloudy with highs in the mid 50s, moderate west wind and a 60 percent chance of rain. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
