Visitors:
Jim from PEI joined us for 5 hours today and helped us spot those
high-flying kettles of TV's. Nathalie from Leamington helped count Jays
when the TV's were in the stratosphere; and a couple from Sarnia dropped in
for a couple hours.
Weather:
Another sunny day with not a cloud in the sky. Winds blew out of the SE all
day at less than 5 km/hr until the last 2 hours of the count when it
reached 8 km/hr. The temperature ranged from 8 - 20C.
Raptor Observations:
Other than Turkey Vultures it was a very slow day. Out of the 2,900 raptors
counted only 33 were not TV's. There was 1 late adult Broad-winged Hawk in
a kettle of TV's.
Non-raptor Observations:
Another generally slow non-raptor migration day. Other than Blue Jays
almost all the other non-raptor migration occurred in the 1st hour of the
count. Sightings included: Killdeer-11; Belted Kingfisher-2 (the resident
male is still present); Northern Flicker-3; Blue-headed Vireo-3; Blue
Jay-2,888; Northern Rough-winged Swallow-2; Bank Swallow-4; Ruby-crowned
Kinglet-12; Cedar Waxwing-2; Common Yellowthroat-1; Palm Warbler-2;
Yellow-rumped Warbler-32; 3 each of White-throated & White-crowned Sparrow;
413 Red-winged Blackbird; American Goldfinch-4. Monarchs - 32.
Predictions:
Same as today with the only difference is that the winds are predicted to
be out of the E at 10-15 km/hr. No sign of northerly winds until Saturday.
