Visitors:
Michigan birders were well represented today with visitors from Ann Arbor
(4), Dexter (2) and Charlevoix (2). From the Canadian side of the border we
had birders from Tecumseh, Belle River, London and Waterloo.
Weather:
When I arrived at the station this morning the sun was rising in the east
and the harvest full moon was setting in the west, but within 20 minutes we
were socked in by fog. Visibility immediately dropped to 2 kilometres and
then down to 300 metres and did not clear up until noon EST. While the
temperature was between 20C and 23C it certainly felt warmer due to the
humidity and lack of wind. When the wind could be measured it was out of
the south.
Raptor Observations:
The weather conditions did not make for a good day of migration. Only 72
birds of 7 species were observed, with 62 of the 72 being Sharpies. The
Merlins did not mind as we had 3 go through in the fog. One smacked a song
bird in mid-flight, causing a cloud of feathers to go flying, but the
Merlin did not take the song bird. Instead it made a dive bomb onto the
plastic owl over the hawk tower.
Non-raptor Observations:
Not much other migration as well. Five small flocks of Killdeer, totalling
31 birds went over, as did 2 Lesser Yellowlegs. Six warbler species were
observed. Other species of note include: Chimney Swift - 10; Eastern
Wood-Pewee - 2; Cedar Waxwing - 66; and 26 American Goldfinch. Only 2
Monarch Butterflies
Predictions:
It is going to be a mostly cloudy day with S - SW winds of 15 - 25 km/hr.
There is a 40% chance of rain in the morning and a 90% chance in the
afternoon.
