Karen Padbury, Olga Klekner, Roland Klekner
Visitors:
Petra Wagner from Mannheim, Germany; Judy & Phil McComish from Grosse Ile,
MI; John & Barbara McNeill from Sarnia; Kathy Evans from Florence,
Kentucky; Evelyn Valdez from Windsor, and long time visitors Ed & Carole
Pitts from Zainesville, Ohio. Another half dozen visitors came by for an
hour or so.
Weather:
Perfect winds out of the North at 15-25 km/hr most of the day with
generally clear skies. The temperature ranged between 12.7 - 16.6.
Raptor Observations:
It was an excellent day with a total of 41,772 birds of 13 species.
Broad-winged Hawks put on a show as soon as it warmed up. We had 2 single
hours of over 10,000 birds and a total of 40,280 for the day. That makes
for a new 7th high single day count beating the previous 7th place count of
38,566 on this same date in 1986. We also set a new 2nd highest count day
for Bald Eagles at 27, beating the previous 2nd place day of 26 set on
September 9, 2003. Finally, we set a new single day and single year record
for Swainson's Hawk with 3 individual birds today.
Non-raptor Observations:
With all the raptor action the passerines got short shrift today, all some
highlights included: Ruby-throated Hummingbird - 15; the first American
Crows - 6; Bank Swallow - 23; Cedar Waxwing - 38; and American Goldfinch -
152. Monarchs - 7.
Predictions:
Winds out of the east at 15 km/hr should still provide for good raptor
movement. The temperature of 11 - 19C should make it comfortable, as should
the mostly sunny morning and sunny afternoon.
