Weather: Gray skies dominated until some blue began to peek through in the early afternoon. Rain threatened throughout but a brief early morning shower proved to be our only wet patch. A thin layer of lingering fog made spotting difficult at times. When present, the wind was out of the east and southeast. Raptor Observations: Some nice variety and a good early Turkey Vulture flight today. Activity was most abundant when we finally got some hoped-for clearing during the early afternoon. Non-raptor Observations: Red-winged Blackbird (80), Common Grackle (25), Mourning Dove (45), American Goldfinch (12), Ruby-throated Hummingbird (6) and Purple Martin (6) were all moving. Other birds of note: Common Loon, Caspian Tern, Forster's Tern, Black-crowned Night Heron, Belted Kingfisher, Cedar Waxwing, Warbling Vireo, Barn Swallow. Predictions: Labor Day's looking fun: partly sunny with moderate northwest wind. Should be good. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) SMRR- Lake Erie Metropark information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
