An adult LITTLE GULL was seen briefly (approx. 7 to 7:45 pm) from the Quebec
shore of the Ottawa River below the Deshenes Rapids on the 1st. The bird was
flying up and down over the rapids on both the Quebec and Ontario side of the
river then flew west and was not reported again.
The number of migrating shorebirds continues to increase.
On the rocks in the Ottawa River Deschenes rapids:
- at dusk on the 1st there was BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER (1 breeding and 1
nonbreeding plumage) and on the 3rd there were BONAPARTE'S GULL (9)
At Ottawa Beach (Belltown Park) east of Andrew Haydon Park on the 2nd there
were BONAPARTE'S GULL (6 breeding plumage)
On the mud flats and shallow water from the Shirleys Bay causeway:
- on the 8th there was SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER (1), WILSON'S SNIPE (1),
SEMIPALMATED PLOVER (6), LESSER (66) and GREATER (1) YELLOWLEGS, PECTORAL (1),
LEAST (28), SEMIPALMATED (25), SOLITARY (1) and SPOTTED (1) SANDPIPER as well
as COMMON TERN (2), GREAT EGRET (8), BLUE-WINGED (5) and GREEN-WINGED (15)
TEAL. On the causeway and in the Shirleys Bay woods there were EASTERN
WOOD-PEWEE (3), TRAIL'S (1) and GREAT CRESTED (3) FLYCATCHER, RED-EYED VIREO
(4), NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH (1), BLACK-AND-WHITE (3), COMMON YELLOWTHROAT (2),
AMERICAN REDSTART (2), YELLOW (4) and CHESTNUT-SIDED (1) WARBLER.
At the Embrun lagoons:
- on the 4th there were LESSER (20) and GREATER (1) YELLOWLEGS, SPOTTED
(many), SEMIPALMATED (5), PECTORAL (1) SANDPIPER as well as RUDDY DUCK (9),
PIED-BILLED GREBE (3), BANK (300), BARN (100) and CLIFF (1) SWALLOW, MERLIN (1)
At the St. Albert lagoons:
- on the 4th there were LESSER YELLOWLEGS (few), SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER (3),
BLUE-WINGED (8) and GREEN-WINGED TEAL, COMMON GALLINULE (many adult and juv),
COOT (1), HOODED MERGANSER (4), BANK (125) and TREE (10) SWALLOW and AMERICAN
KESTREL (2)
At the Russell lagoons:
- on the 7th there was REDHEAD (1)
Interesting sightings:
- CAPE MAY WARBLER (1) in the Britannia Conservation area woods on the 2nd
- BLACK-THROATED BLUE (adult feeding juv) and BLACK-THROATED GREEN (adults and
juv) WARBLER at Foret-la-Blanche near Mayo, Quebec on the 1st
- PALM WARBLER (1) on Con 10 (Drouin Rd) on the 7th
- CHUKAR (escapee) was calling from a roof top on Bon Echo Crescent in Kanata
on the 8th
- CASPIAN TERN continue at Shirleys Bay and Deschenes Rapids
