There were only a few reports of local breeding birds and a few early
migrating shorebirds this week.

Thanks to a Carleton Place birder for providing the following,

"Just a heads-up that there is good shorebird habitat in the western cell at
Almonte. This cell, which always used to have high water, has been lowered and
there is habitat at the edges and some sandbars. I was there at about 10 a.m.
and there were lots of killdeers, some yellowlegs, spotted and least sandpipers
and a possible solitary.
Viewing of the western cell is from the MVFN (Mississippi Valley Field
Naturalists) viewing stand. To get there from Almonte, drive past the main
entrance and buildings on Wolf Grove Rd and turn right onto Ramsay 8 at the
Auld Kirk. Park on the road at the first gate on the right, opposite the
cemetery. Walk in the gate and follow the edge of the recently-cut hay field
to the left until you get to the viewing stand. The stand has been repaired,
but the steps are high (bad knees won’t make it) and there is only room for two
people with scopes on the deck, one at the upper level and one at the mid level.
Lighting was poor when I was there. Best time would be late afternoon or early
evening to get the sun behind."

The marsh and shoreline of the Carp River south of Carp (from Rivington St)
continues to be active. On the 12th there were: COMMON GALLINULE (1), WILSON'S
SNIPE (4), SOLITARY (1), LEAST (1) and SPOTTED (2) SANDPIPER, LESSER YELLOWLEGS
(3) and KILLDEER (12).

Also on the 12th there was a very early SEMIPALMATED PLOVER (1) on the shore of
the Rideau River at the Jock River Landing off of Prince of Wales Pkwy.

Interesting sightings;
- MERLIN (2 adult and 2 juv.) continue on Featherston Dr in Alta Vista on the
16th
- CAROLINA WREN continues to be heard on Manotick Island approximately mid
block on Hartwell Rd on the 14th
- MONK PARAKEET (most likely an escapee) which has been south of Smyth Rd since
June 6th was heard on the west side of Lynda Lane on the 16th

Thank you to everyone who contributed bird observations!
